The Spartan Hockey Academy 14M team edged out the Riggers Hockey Academy in a thrilling 6-4 contest that saw momentum swing back and forth throughout the night. The Spartans set the tone early, with Charlie Couldwell opening the scoring midway through the first period. The Riggers answered back when Connor Harris buried a feed from Brycen Hardy and Keegan Hamm, but the Spartans reclaimed the lead just before the period ended thanks to Drew Balderston, assisted by Hunter Evaskevich and Couldwell. The middle frame belonged entirely to the visitors, as Jack Purdy, Finn Inglis, and Colby Lane all found the back of the net. Lane’s goal, assisted by Purdy and Dominic Nimchuk, would ultimately stand as the game-winner, giving the Spartans a commanding 5-1 lead heading into the final period.
Facing a steep deficit, the Riggers mounted a furious third-period comeback that electrified the home crowd. Cruz Wiederspiel started the rally, converting a setup from Maximus Bilodeau. Just over five minutes later, Brycen Hardy scored with helpers from Max Martinig and Bilodeau again, cutting the lead to two. The comeback gained serious momentum when Hadyn Dennis scored just 35 seconds later, assisted by Wiederspiel and Hunter Miller, making it a one-goal game with over seven minutes still to play. The Riggers poured on the pressure, outshooting the Spartans 21-9 in the period, but Spartan goalie Quinten Alessio stood tall, turning aside a barrage of chances to protect the narrow lead.
Despite the Riggers' heroic push, Charlie Couldwell iced the game for the Spartans with an empty-net goal in the final seconds, completing his multi-point night and sealing the 6-4 victory. The game was a penalty-filled affair, with both teams spending significant time in the box, including a bench minor for too many men on the Riggers. In the end, the Spartans' strong second period and timely goaltending from Alessio proved the difference, handing the hard-charging Riggers a tough loss despite their valiant third-period effort.
