Despite being outshot 43-34, Sauce goaltender Bennett Tice weathered the storm to secure the win, while Spartan netminder Damon Fleischer faced a relentless Sauce attack throughout the contest.
The second period set the tone for the wild affair, opening with a flurry of special teams action. Sawyer Grierson struck first for the Spartans with a shorthanded goal, but Sauce's Kase Lindberg answered right back with a shorthanded tally of his own just over two minutes later. Hudson Cullen then gave Sauce their first lead, assisted by Thomas Jones. The Spartans responded late in the period when Beckhem Falloon found the net, with Callum Sherban picking up the helper. The third period saw the offenses explode, with Charlie Formenti putting the Spartans ahead briefly with assists from Sherban and Will Mattersdorfer, only to see Sauce respond with three straight goals from Thomas Jones, Enzo Fournier, and Fournier again on the power play for what proved to be the game-winner, assisted by Parker Christianson. Jiwu Youn scored a late power play goal for the Spartans, assisted by Falloon, to make it a one-goal game, but time ran out on their comeback bid.
The game was marred by penalties throughout, with both teams spending significant time in the box. Cohen Codner of the Spartans and Carter Seabrook of Sauce each took multiple minors, while Eli Horb of Sauce was penalized twice. The physical play escalated in the third period with matching roughing minors to Codner and Lindberg, and later to Codner and Eric Bowhay. In the end, it was Sauce's ability to capitalize on their opportunities, particularly Fournier's clutch power play goal late in the third, that made the difference in this tightly contested matchup.
